Treating Osteoarthritis Naturally

Natural Ingredients Effective in the Fight Against Osteoarthritis

Some patients worry that a 1-2 week relief timeline sounds too far away. They’re used to taking a prescription and feeling almost instantaneous results. With natural remedies, such as glucosamine, the relief may take a bit longer, but the effects last longer and are more powerful than many alternatives. Remember, no drug on the market today will do anything to fundamentally affect your osteoarthritis. If it did, it would put drug companies out of business - they rely on you (or your insurance) paying them hundreds of dollars a month for drugs that only help to make your osteoarthrits problem seem like it is getting better, when in reality it is simply getting worse.

Here are some additional natural ingredients that have been shown to effectively promote healty joints, repair damage cartilage and help to maintain flexibility and joint health. No substance will cure you completely - but do all that you can to prevent your condition from getting worse. Covering up your pain with NSAIDS, COX-2 inhibitors or drugs does not make it go away!

  • Glucosamine – An amino sugar that not only helps cartilage retain water, but also aids in repairing unhealthy or weakened cartilage and prevents the production of destructive enzymes.
  • Manganese Ascorbate – A mineral that your body must have in order to build the various connective tissues it needs – including cartilage.
  • Aloe Vera – Contains a multitude of vitamins and minerals that assist your body in remaining healthy. It is a natural anti-inflammatory agent that relieves sore muscles and also has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.
  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids – Essential fatty acids that the body cannot naturally produce on its own. Found in cold-water fish (salmon, mackerel) and certain plant oils, Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to alleviate sore joints, morning stiffness, and allow a reduction in medication necessary for severe Osteoarthritis cases.
  • Boswellia Serrata (Boswellin) – Extracted from the same Indian tree that frankincense is derived from, Boswellia has a reputation for both spiritual and medicinal strengths. Due to the fact that it prohibits production of leukotrienes, which are inflammatory agents, Osteoarthritis sufferers have long been touting it as a pain-relieving remedy without the stomach-irritation side effects of NSAIDs.
  • Niacinamide – A form of the vitamin B3 that, in studies, has allowed Osteoarthritis sufferers to reduce the amount of their anti-inflammatory medication. Patients in studies showed increased joint mobility and reduced inflammation.
  • Vitamin C – A water-soluble ascorbic acid that humans are unable to produce. In studies, Osteoarthritis patients have found that a higher intake of the vitamin seemed to halt the progression of the disease. It heals wounds, repairs connective tissue, and is a vital ingredient in producing collagen.
  • Vitamin A – A key determiner in the development of Osteoporosis, vitamin A is essential to patients with Osteoarthritis because it aids in the formation of bone structures and possesses an antioxidant quality.
  • Vitamin E – A powerful antioxidant that protects cell membranes and offers pain relief to Osteoarthritis sufferers. For those with sports injuries, vitamin E acts as a defense against the body’s production of free radicals, which damage muscles during intense athletic training.
  • Bromelaine – A mixture of enzymes found in pineapples that restores proper fluid balance and assists in cleaning away the debris often occurring by fraying cartilage. Also reduces pain, swelling, and the production of inflammatory compounds.
  • Yucca – A root with naturally occurring steroid saponins, which help your body naturally produce cortisone. It is also rich in vitamins and has been used for decades by Native American Indians to treat broken bones and arthritis symptoms.
  • Chondroitin – A naturally occurring substance found in the connective tissues of the body (such as cartilage). It also replenishes hydration of the joint area and works hand in hand with glucosamine to repair your tender joints.
  • MSM (Methyl Sulphonyl Methane) – An organic sulpher found in all living organisms and is the fourth most common compound in the body – half of which is found in the muscles, skin, and bones. It helps build healthy connective tissue and maintain proper joint functions.

There are many medical “miracles” being touted as a way to effectively manage osteoarthritic pain and suffering. However, common sense tells us that natural remedies would be far better than synthetic ones because our bodies are more accepting of ingredients already found within them than foreign drugs and chemicals.
